High School Physical Education Curriculum

 

Grade 9 Physical Education

Course Description:

The KAS program is about lifelong fitness and student development. This is done through participation in physical activities (team and individual) with an emphasis on the importance of lifelong physical activity. The program is designed to give students experience in the skills needed to be successful in various sports and activities as they develop those skills throughout the years. Improvement and effort are more important than mastery of the skills. At Middle School and High School levels, knowledge of the rules and how the activities are important.

Units:

  • Major sports: Fitness development, Basketball, Soccer, Volleyball Swimming and Water Polo
  • Minor sports: Baseball, Dodge ball, Capture the Flag, Kickball, Ultimate Frisbee, Field and Floor Hockey, American football, Touch Rugby

Skills and Understandings:

  • Students will understand the value of physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, self-expression, and/or social interaction.
  • Students will demonstrate competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
  • Students will demonstrate an understanding of movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics as they apply them to the learning and performance of physical activities
  • Students will understand how to achieve and maintain health-enhancing levels of physical fitness.
  • Students will exhibit responsible personal and social behavior that respects self and others in physical activity settings

  • Allowing students to gain a ‘rich and broad understanding of today’s world’ by understanding the cultural foundations of different disciplines.
  • Allowing students to develop ‘global citizenship’ by understanding cultural influences on sports.
  • Allowing students to develop a ‘positive self-image’ by practicing friendly competition among different groups.

 

Grade 10 Team Sports

Course Description:

The objective of this course is to teach and allow students to work as a team and build a strong sense of sportsmanship. Students will be required to participate in all activities and will be evaluated based on their participation and activeness in class.
